What are PFOS and PFOA? They are human-made compounds that do not occur naturally in the environment (ATSDR 2015; EPA 2009b). PFOS and PFOA are fully fluorinated, organic compounds. They are the Human exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is a public health concern that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) are helping our local, territorial, tribal, state, and federal partners address. Main toxic effects of PFOS include hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, thyroid disruption, and cardiovascular toxicity. For each toxic effect, the PFOS-induced symptoms and pathological changes are first introduced, and then the possible mechanisms proposed in the reviewed articles were analyzed and illustrated.

In the case of PFASs, such a complete dossier is only available for PFOA and PFOS, 2010-06-10 · PFOS is a mid-level toxin according to the WHO classification criteria for acute toxicity of compounds. In the present study, the various PFOS induced malformations including bent spine (mainly cyphosis and scoliosis), uninflated swim bladder, and decreased hatching rates are in agreement with the previous findings ( Shi et al., 2008 ), although the parameters are slightly dissimilar. Both PFOS and OBS triggered the body axis curvature, which may in turn be linked to the defects of ciliogenesis in zebrafish. In terms of neurobehavior, OBS produced a neurobehavioral toxicity phenotype similar to PFOS, which was, however weaker than PFOS at the same exposure concentration.

Both chemicals have caused tumors in animal studies. The most consistent findings from human epidemiology studies are increased cholesterol levels among the toxicity assessment for perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) and its potassium salt, potassium perfluorobutane sulfonate (K+PFBS), to increase the amount of information the public has on PFAS. The PFBS toxicity assessment can be used along with exposure information and other important For PFAS chemicals as of September 2019: Tier 1 values are peer-reviewed toxicity values published on the USEPA’s Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS). There are no PFAS chemicals in IRIS with published values.

Mice pups were administered PFOS by one subcutaneous injection. PFOS induced degression of the body weights of mice and increase of relative weights of liver. PFOS and PFOA are man-made chemicals belonging to the group known as Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances. PFOS, PFOA and related chemicals (Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) have been used, and remain in the environment around several sites in NSW. acute oral toxicity of PFOS/PFOA, with effects on the liver and gastrointestinal tract.

Based on toxicity data, the CONTAM Panel of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) for human exposure to PFOS and PFOA has calculated a maximum tolerable daily intake (Tolerable Daily Intake, TDI) of 150 ng / kg per day, respectively 1.5 µg / kg per day.In addition, the EFSA notes that health effects to the public are not very likely, but that monitoring over time is certainly recommended. 2014-07-01 Acute toxicity of PFOS/PFOA to zebrafish (Danio rerio) and development effects to zebrafish embryo were examined using a zebrafish embryo test. PFOS/PFOA showed remarkably toxicity effects on sources of PFOS pollution [6,7]. PFOS is ubiquitously found in the environment, and it continues to bioaccumulate in a range of organisms [6]. Furthermore, information regarding the toxicity of PFOS at sub-lethal concentrations is lacking. PFOS studies in mammalian laboratory experiments Developmental Toxicity of Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and Its Chlorinated Polyfluoroalkyl Ether Sulfonate Alternative F-53B in the Domestic Chicken.

Both chemicals produced maternal toxicity; deficits of maternal weight gains and liver enlargement were common features. human exposure is universal, hence a potential risk to human health. Yet the toxicity potential of several PFASs, including perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), remains largely unknown. This PhD project therefore aimed at investigating the developmental toxicity of PFHxS, with an emphasis onthe reproductive, the thyroid hormone and immune the Mar 2, 2020 While PFOS induced higher toxicity in affecting cytoskeleton signaling, Sertoli cell –cell junction, and inflammation, underlined by Ingenuity  Jan 24, 2020 PFAS alternatives to PFOA and PFOS have also been linked to health complications.
